$GSAT – FCC Approves Globalstar’s Next-Generation Satellite Network
Globalstar ($GSAT) has received FCC authorization to operate its third-generation C-3 satellite system across the United States, marking a major regulatory milestone for its next-generation satellite connectivity plans.
The approval allows C-3 satellites to connect with mobile devices across the U.S., including support for direct-to-device (D2D) smartphone connectivity. It also authorizes ground-station antennas in six U.S. locations to communicate with the satellites.
Globalstar plans a constellation of 48 low Earth orbit satellites plus six in-orbit spares, designed to increase network capacity, improve performance and support future satellite communication services. Satellite launches are expected to begin in 2027.
The authorization is an important step, but the network still needs to be deployed before its full capabilities can be delivered commercially. Investors will be watching launch progress, network expansion and how the new system fits into Globalstar’s broader satellite strategy.
Why it matters: Direct-to-device satellite technology could help extend connectivity beyond traditional cellular coverage, particularly in remote areas where building terrestrial infrastructure is difficult.
Bottom line: The FCC approval removes a significant regulatory hurdle for $GSAT’s C-3 system. The next major milestones are satellite launches beginning in 2027 and progress toward commercial deployment.
