U.S. stocks rebounded Friday, September 11, snapping a four-day losing streak as easing oil prices helped offset still-firm inflation and rising expectations for a Federal Reserve hike. The S&P 500 gained 0.86% to 7,656.98, Dow rose 0.98% (+509 points) to 52,573.29, Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.96% to 26,333.04, and Russell 2000 added 0.4%. August CPI rose 0.4% month-over-month and 3.4% year-over-year, leaving markets pricing close to a 90% probability of a 25-bp Fed hike Wednesday; the 10-year Treasury yield climbed near 4.97%. Oil's nearly 3% retreat provided relief after its recent surge, while AI infrastructure remained strong following Oracle earnings, with Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise both jumping roughly 12%. Despite Friday's rally, the S&P lost 0.8%, Dow 1.6% and Nasdaq 0.7% for the week.
