U.S. stocks finished lower Friday, September 4, as a surprisingly strong August jobs report pushed Treasury yields higher and increased expectations for another Federal Reserve rate hike. The S&P 500 fell 0.38% to 7,718.60, the Dow dropped 0.51% to 53,414.25, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.29% to 26,506.99, while the Russell 2000 gained 0.2%. Nonfarm payrolls jumped 162,000 versus roughly 55,000 expected, unemployment held at 4.1%, and July payrolls were revised from a decline to a gain, reinforcing the view that the labor market remains resilient. The two-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.37%, while markets moved toward roughly a 60% probability of a September Fed hike. Despite Friday's weakness, the S&P finished the holiday-shortened week +0.1% and Nasdaq +0.4%, while the Dow lost 0.3%. 07-SEP-2026 02:14 PM ET
